In today’s hectic era, stress is very common among people. It is a word that we hear a lot of time and usually feel stressed when we are unable to cope with high demands that are placed on us and it creates automatic changes in our body. Our bodies and mind respond to stress in different ways.
1. Sugar level
It is important to be aware that stress can bring a major change in sugar level. When our body is under stress it releases the stored glucose which can increase the level of sugar. Stress level also disturbs people interfere with their regular activity. Stress for diabetic patients can act as a poison as a change in sugar level can affect drastically on their health. Mainly, there are two types of stress :
Physical stress: It generally increases the sugar level in the body.
Mental or emotional stress: It has mixed effects on sugar level.
2. Shortness of breath
Stress can also cause shortness of breath as our stress tightens the muscles that help us breathe and it makes it difficult for us to breathe. If we are so stressed then it can make our breathing muscles tired and can make a situation worse.
3. Heart Disease
Stress and coronary heart disease are co-related. It affects the heart by releasing certain hormones that increase blood pressure and encourage clotting in the arteries. When stress grips the body, heart starts pounding. It also raises cholesterol level which increases the risk of heart disease.
4. Immune System
Stress hormones released by the adrenals affect white blood cells. White blood cells fight with infections within our blood. When you are stressed, the body produces more stress hormone that is cortisol which suppresses the immune system by reducing the amount of proteins required to signal to other immune cells. This reduces the number of immune cells.
Sleep disorders are closely related to stress. Not all insomnia is due to stress but people dealing with stress has high chances of suffering from insomnia. Stress makes it difficult to stay asleep and reduces the quality of sleep. We all are aware of the importance of sleep for the health and stress directly affects sleep which leads to health problems.
It should be noted that stress can also lead to depression. When stress doesn’t shut off even after some time then there are chances that it may turn into depression.
Acts to manage stress
Meditation is said to be a simple and fast way to reduce stress. It has been practised for thousands of years and said to be a great way to relax the state of mind. During meditation, you focus your attention and forgets about the stress and other problems for some time. This helps in the relaxation of mind and gives a sense of calm and peace. Focused attention is the most important element of meditation as focussed attention makes you free from a depressed state of mind.
2. Maintain balanced nutrition
This might sound weird but there is a connection between stress and balanced nutrition. Poor diet can make you more stressed and people who are under stress often forget to take timely meals. According to studies, well-nourished body helps in dealing with stress.
3. Exercise regularly
Regular exercise is said to be a vital part of maintaining mental fitness and it reduces stress. Physical activities produce chemical endorphins in the brain which improves the quality of sleep and in turn reduces stress. It has many other benefits too for maintaining overall health.
4. Stay At Bay From Overuse Of Gadgets
There is a fine line between utility and exploitation. What most of the people are up to these days is plain exploitation of technology. Our days are spent scrolling through our gadgets which have made a room in every part of our lives including office, school and home (read more). Overuse of gadgets brings mental unrest in humans. There is a situation of paranoia, and fear of missing out is for real.
