Know Foods That Lower The Risk Of Cancer

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global cancer burden is estimated to have risen to 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018. It is estimated that one in every five men and one in every 6 women develop cancer at some point in life.

Cancer is a life-threatening condition which is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. It has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Cancer is defined as a disease which is characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.

There are multiple types of cancer and all are associated with a significant decrease in the health-related quality of life of an individual. But the lung cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer are the three types of cancers, and it is estimated that these three types of cancers are responsible for almost one-third of the total cancer incidence.

Although one cannot ignore the risk of developing cancer, research suggests that a large number of cancers are caused by the environmental and behavioral factors that can be modifiable. Therefore, a substantial proportion of cancers can be prevented. Some of the preventable factors include tobacco intake, excessive alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity or unhealthy weight. Tobacco smoking is considered to be the primary known cause of cancer-related deaths across the world. Most commonly smoking cause lung cancer.

Taking care of the preventable factors of cancer is an effective way to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Evidence suggests that the food that we eat can play a role in the risk of developing cancer. Unhealthy foods can increase the risk of developing cancer, whereas, foods that contain anticancer properties can reduce the risk of cancer.

Here is the list of some of the foods that contain anti-cancer properties:

1. Garlic

Garlic is considered to be one of the natural sources for cancer prevention. Garlic is a common herb which is used as a food item as well as a medicinal herb for various health problems, including cancer. Evidence suggests that garlic consists of many compounds that contain anti-carcinogenic properties.

The organic allyl sulfur components of garlic are effective inhibitors of the cancer process. Ally sulfur compounds in garlic make the cells vulnerable to the stress and cancer cells divide quickly and generate more stressor than normal cells.

It has been observed that garlic contains more than 100 compounds that are beneficial for the health of an individual and some of the compounds that are effective in preventing cancer include alliin, alliinase, allicin, S-allyl cysteine, diallyl disulfide, and diallyl trisulfide. Garlic also prevents the damage to DNA in the body and it is believed that damage to DNA is one of the common cause of uncontrolled growth of the cells.

2. Walnuts

Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of the consumption of walnuts and the risk of cancer. Studies have shown that regular consumption of walnut slows the growth of an existing tumor and reduces the risk of tumor in healthy individuals.

Walnuts contain a high amount of polyphenols and phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties that protect the cells and prevents the damage to DNA in the body. Any damage cause of DNA has an impact on the cells in the body and makes them function abnormally.

Alpha-lipoic acids (ALA) is an amazing nutrient that is associated with tumor suppression and kills cancer cells. In walnuts, alpha-lipoic acid is available in a good amount and contributes to decreasing the risk of developing cancer. It is known to have many antioxidants that have many benefits on the health of an individual. The antioxidant properties of alpha-lipoic acid have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cells and promote the destruction of the cancerous cells in the body.

3. Legumes

Much evidence supports the health benefits of increasing the intake of legumes. Legumes have been known to significantly reduces the risk of cancer and other health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. There is evidence that states the beneficial properties of legumes, but the strongest evidence being for the correlation between intake of legumes and reduced risk of colorectal cancer.

Legumes are loaded with fiber and proteins and fiber feeds good bacteria in the digestive tract in order to keep the cells healthy. Also, high fiber and proteins in the diet increase the feeling of fullness in the body and reduce the intake of calories, resulting in reduced risk of obesity. obesity is one of the common risk factors for cancer.

Legumes prevent the development of various types of cancer such as colorectal, breasts, and pancreas. It also contains resistant starch which is used by the bacterias present in the colon to protect healthy cells.

4. Blueberry

Blueberries are one of the most commonly consumed berries and are widely known for its high antioxidant properties. There are a number of possible ways through which cancer can be prevented by the consumption of blueberries. According to research, the mechanisms or ways generally based around vitamins, mineral, fiber, and its bioactive.

Blueberries are rich in phenolic compounds and phenolic compounds are often considered to be an effective remedy for cancer. It prevents the development of cancer. The anticancer properties of blueberries significantly depend on consumption.

Blueberries are extremely rich in source of antioxidant phytochemicals which are highly beneficial. Blueberries contain a wide range of bioactive phytochemicals such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, sterols, stilbenes, and triterpenes, and all these phytochemicals contribute to cancer suppression and prevention.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice which is used in almost every household and is also known to have multiple medical benefits. Turmeric is beneficial in the prevention and treatment of many health problems, including cancer. The primary compound or polyphenol present in turmeric is curcumin which is mainly responsible for all the positive effects of turmeric on the human body.

The mechanism by which turmeric or curcumin exerts its anticancer effects is by targeting the levels of regulations in the process of cellular growth and apoptosis. The antioxidant and free radical quenching properties of turmeric inhibit the compounds at the initial stage of the occurrence of the tumor. Turmeric also protects the damage to DNA, resulting in a reduced risk of developing cancer.
