5 Herbs To Treat Hypertension

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is one of the chronic metabolic disorder which affects millions of people worldwide. Blood pressure is defined as the force of blood against the walls of the artery as it circulates through the body. Every individual has blood pressure which is required to move blood to the arteries and provide oxygen to the tissues of the body. When this blood pressure increases, an elevated pressure is known as hypertension. Blood pressure is controlled by various mechanism, that is nitric oxide, neural mechanisms, renal-endocrine mechanism, many antihypertensive drugs such as diuretics. It can vary substantially and can also be affected by emotions, pain, eating, nicotine drugs, mental activity and physical activity. As changing lifestyle leads to reduced physical activity and increased obesity, there is an increase in the numbers of the cases diagnosed with hypertension.

Hypertension is known as a silent killer as it has no early significant symptoms but it continues to create extra load on the heart and the blood vessels. Many people do not realize that they have high blood pressure and this is one of the most important reasons to get blood pressure checked regularly. Sometimes high blood pressure could give rise to early morning headache, buzzing in the ears and irregular heartbeat but severe hypertension can give rise to symptoms such as vomiting, chest pain, nausea, confusion, anxiety, and muscle tremors.

High blood pressure is largely preventable by adopting some lifestyle changes such as limiting the consumption of alcohol, being physically active, eating a healthy diet and managing the diseases which are correlated with hypertension. Hypertension can be controlled by pharmacological ways, antihypertensive drugs or through non-pharmacological ways, lifestyle changes and alternative therapies such as:

1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the most bioactive product and has been shown to have a positive effect of blood pressure in humans. It has also been shown to be the same when consumed and contains many pharmacological properties such as antioxidants and anti-bacterial effects. Hypertension is a serious condition and if left untreated, it can impair the functioning of the heart and can cause damage to the heart, brain, and kidney. Stroke is one of the most common results of high blood pressure. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde that has been found to have an anti-clotting action that prevents the platelet clogging inside the blood pressure and as a result, it prevents stroke, peripheral arterial and coronary artery disease.  

2. Garlic

Garlic, also known as Allium Sativum has long been used as a pungent spice in numerous countries and it has also been used for various medicinal purposes. Garlic supplements are believed to reduce blood pressure and the mechanism for the blood pressure lowering effects of garlic include, vasorelaxation from alliin and the enzyme alliinase, controlling the production and function of endothelium derived relaxing and constricting factors. Garlic is a rich source of selenium which is important for the health. Also, allicin and alliin are the most active compounds present in the garlic and these compounds are thought to be the most beneficial compound in terms of the cardiovascular risk factor.

3. Basil

Basil, also known as Ocimum Basilicum has got a well documented beneficial effect in many medicinal conditions. It is widely used to treat the problems that are related to the cardiovascular system, particularly hypertension and coronary heart disease. Basil leaves are the common herb that is commonly found and it is one of the simple ways to maintain normal blood pressure and it also supports the functioning of vital organs. Basil leaves are the rich source of vitamin C, pantothenic acid, potassium, and magnesium. Also, this herb has several properties such as antioxidants, anti-mutagenic, anti-viral, antitumorigenic and anti-bacterial properties and all these properties make the extract of this herb beneficial in lowering the blood pressure.

4. Ginger

Ginger, also known as Zingiber Officinale is one of the widely used product for various health problems as it has many effects that enhance the immune system, and also improves the cardiovascular system. It contains several constituents such as gingerol, gingerdiol, gingerdione, and curumin and all these constituents play a great role in the management of blood pressure. It also contains a great amount of potassium which has a role in the regulation of blood pressure and heartbeat.

5. Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are highly rich in the fiber, antioxidant lignans, and are found to have antihypertensive effects through the reduction of vascular constriction and inflammation. According to one of the studies, regular intake of flax seeds significantly decreased the blood pressure in hypertensive patients. These seeds exert its anti-hypertensive effect by inhibiting soluble epoxide hydrolase by alpha-linolenic acid. It also causes a significant decrease in the central aortic blood pressure without any involvement of cardiac or arterial elasticity. Flax seeds are considered to be beneficial seeds for lowering high blood pressure.

Hypertension is one of the leading cause of death and it is very important to control the blood pressure of the body. Medications are the solution to almost every health problem but when these medications are accompanied by some natural ways, they work better. These are some of the regular things that can help you manage the blood pressure and decreases the risk of developing this disease.
