What is digestion?

Digestion is a process by which the gastrointestinal system in the body retrieves all the important nutrients in the body and chemically changes the unused food into waste. Digestion is categorized into two:

  • Mechanical digestion – It is a muscular movement of the digestive tract that physically breaks down food into smaller particles.
  • Chemical digestion – It is a hydrolysis reaction that is aided by enzymes. It chemically breaks down food into nutrients, molecules, and small enough to be absorbed.

The digestive system in the human body is divided into two groups – Gastrointestinal tract and accessory structures. The gastrointestinal tract is a continuous tube extending through the ventral cavity from the mouth to the anus. Accessory structures include the gallbladder, salivary gland, liver, and pancreas.

What is the process of digestion?

Chewing of food is the first step of digestion. Saliva in the mouth initiates the digestion by changing the chewed food into soft mass and making it easier to be swallowed, and slide down the throat and esophagus. The soft mass of the food enters the stomach and there is a release of hydrochloric acid inside the stomach and leads to breaking down of the large food molecules into the smaller ones. It also causes liquifying of the soft mass of the food. The liquefied food then reaches the small intestine. The small intestine is lined with the heavily folded inner mucosa and small projections which are known as villi. The villi enable the digested food to enter the bloodstream. Very little digestion occurs in the large intestine. Undigested food is considered as waste.

Digestion is important and whenever the process of digestion is disturbed, it causes a problem. There are many ways to improve digestion such as physical activity and healthy eating. There are some foods that can improve digestion and some of them include:

1. Yogurt

Yogurt is a dairy product that provides many nutrients to the human body and helps to maintain a healthy body, such as calcium and potassium. Yogurt provides proteins and proteins in yogurt helps to build and repair muscles. Yogurt is also beneficial in improving digestion. Yogurt contains probiotics that promote healthy digestion. The digestive system of the human body consists of some bacterias, some are good and some are harmful to the body. Harmful bacterias can cause the problem in digestion. Banana is one of such fruits that offer great medical benefit. Bananas are often used to fight digestive disorder and intestinal disorders. Banana neutralizes the acidity of the gastric juices. Digestive disorders are associated with problems with bowel movements. Bananas are rich in non-digestible fibers that help restore normal bowel activity and treats constipation. It normalizes the colon’s function to absorb a large amount of water for regular bowel movements. Banana nourishes probiotic bacteria in the colon. Banana is an extremely healthy food and it is a rich source of potassium, calcium, fiber, magnesium, iron and multiple vitamins.

4.  Avocado

Avocado contains many benefits to the digestive system. Avocados are highly nutritional and the fiber in avocado helps in promoting digestion. Fiber helps to absorb water to soften and loosen the stool. Eating food that is high in fiber can prevent constipation, and decrease the risk of developing colon cancer. Digestion problems are most common in people who suffer from constipation or colon cancer. Regular bowel movements are the sign of a healthy digestive system. Also, avocados are the rich source of vitamin C and vitamin C is important to maintain a healthy digestive tract.

5. Ginger

Ginger is an effective food that is beneficial to treat various health problems, including problems that are associated with a digestive system. Ginger acts as a stimulant of digestion. Ginger is often recommended to people who have problems digesting fat, having problems with appetite or just stomach ache. Many clinical trials support the use of ginger to treat the problems related to the digestive tract and indigestion is one of the most common problems associated with it.  Many times, ginger is recommended to people suffering from constipation and research have shown that people found it as an effective solution to digestion problems.
